MACHU PICCHU DISCOVERED 100 YEARS AGO
On July 24, 1911, American archeologist Hiram Bingham gets his first look at Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca settlement in Peru that is now one of the world's top tourist destinations.
Tucked away in the rocky countryside northwest of Cuzco, Machu Picchu is believed to have been a summer retreat for Inca leaders, whose civilization was virtually wiped out by Spanish invaders in the 16th century. For hundreds of years afterwards, its existence was a secret known only to the peasants living in the region. That all changed in the summer of 1911, when Bingham arrived with a small team of explorers to search for the famous "lost" cities of the Incas.
Traveling on foot and by mule, Bingham and his team made their way from Cuzco into the Urubamba Valley, where a local farmer told them of some ruins located at the top of a nearby mountain. The farmer called the mountain Machu Picchu, which meant "Old Peak" in the native Quechua language. The next day--July 24--after a tough climb to the mountain's ridge in cold and drizzly weather, Bingham met a small group of peasants who showed him the rest of the way. Led by an 11-year-old boy, Bingham got his first glimpse of the intricate network of stone terraces marking the entrance to Machu Picchu.The excited Bingham spread the word about his discovery in a best-selling book, sending hordes of eager tourists flocking to Peru to follow in his footsteps up the Inca trail. The site itself stretches an impressive five miles, with over 3,000 stone steps linking its many different levels. Today, more than 300,000 people tramp through Machu Picchu every year, braving crowds and landslides to see the sun set over the towering stone monuments of the "Sacred City" and marvel at the mysterious splendor of one of the world's most famous man-made wonders.
FIRST MAN ON THE MOON
On 21 July 1969, American Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon.

He described the surface as being like powdered charcoal and the landing craft left a crater about a foot deep.

To land on the moon, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin used a lunar module nicknamed Eagle.
When they landed Neil sent the following message back to Earth
"Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."

A remarkable achievement especially as no human being had ever been in space prior to 1961. Within a short space of only 8 years, we had learned not only how to send someone into space but also to land safely on the moon.
THE FOURTH RUNNING OF THE BULLS
This fourth running of the bulls, with bulls from the mythical Miura bull-ranch, the most veteran bull-breed of the Sanfermin fiestas and the most often used on Sundays precisely because this breed traditionally behave well, turned out to be a very fast running of the bulls (2 min.29 sec.) and very exciting. There were lots of trip-ups and falls due to the large number of runners taking part, especially in the final stretches of Estafeta, Telefónica and the entrance down to the bullring.
The pack of bulls ran the whole stretch at a very fast pace with a big black bull leading the field from the end of the first stretch at Santo Domingo. In Mercaderes, some of the bulls slipped up, but they then continued to run head together and at a very fast pace. In Estafeta, in spite of the fact that there was a lot of pushing and shoving, slips-ups and falls, some good running was also to be seen close to the horns as the bulls began to loosen up and form three small groups. This bull-breed once again behaved nobly without shaping up to make charges at the runners.
Three black bulls lead for most of the way followed tightly behind by the bell-oxen, with a brown-colored bull then coming up behind this group. Further back, there were two more black bulls taking up the rear. The bulls entered the bullring in this order and the black colored bulls were quickly led towards the pens. The brown-colored bull turned back in the center of the ring and caused a few moments of tension before it too was skillfully led towards the pens by the "dobladores" without offering further resistance.

The religious ceremony will take place on Saturday 2 July at 5pm in the Main Courtyard of the Palace of Monaco, where Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Bernard Barsi.
The gates to the Palace will remain open to enable some 3 500 guests to be seated for the ceremony, which will be broadcast on giant screens.
The official dinner, followed by a ball, will take place at the Opera Garnier and on the Terraces of the Monte-Carlo.

Rehabilitation centers and human rights organizations around the world celebrate the UN’s International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on June 26 each year. The day serves as a reminder to people that torture is a crime. This event gives everyone a chance to unite and voice their opinions against human torture.
Organizations, including the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims and Amnesty International, have played an active role in organizing events around the world to promote the day. Activities may include: photo exhibitions; the distribution of posters and other material to boost people’s awareness of issues related to human.
On June 26, 1987, the Convention against Torture came into force. It was an important step in the process of globalizing human rights and acknowledging that torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment should be universally illegal. In 1997 the United Nations General Assembly decided to mark this historic date and designated June 26 each year as the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
The first International Day in Support of Victims of Torture was held on June 26, 1998. It was a day when the United Nations appealed to all governments and members of civil society to take action to defeat torture and torturers everywhere. That same year marked the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which proclaims that “no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment”.

THE ROCIO PILGRIMAGE
Every spring people from all over Spain gather in El Rocio, on the border of Doñana National Park, between Seville and Huelva, for the largest romeria or pilgrimage in Andalusia. The word "romeria" occurred because pilgrims traditionally walked to Rome, and therefore they became known under the name "Romero".
Many people travel for days to participate in the worshipping of the "Madonna of the Dew". They gather in the flat marshlands of the Guadalquivir River delta (south of Almonte), where the statue of the "Madonna of the Dew" has been worshipped since 1280.
Every late May, or early June - to be precise: the weekend before Pentecost Monday, the seventh weekend after Easter people start to arrive on friday.
Various Catholic Fraternals from all corners of Andalucia are traveling with their own "Virgin" from their local church. They come from near and far, on horseback, in overcrowded horse carts or ox-drawn carts. They come with wagons decorated – gypsy style. The women are dressed in stunning flamenco dresses and the men are dressed in leather boots and hats Western-style.
The trip can take days, and each night they camp along the way and dance, sing and party - and consume oceans of vino ... The songs they sing tell stories from the journey, about life, about love and the love for the "Camino" - the way to El Rocio.
The streets of el Rocio are sandy as The Wild West and old cowboy movies, and in front of all houses and bars are wooden bar where you can tie your horse.

MALAGA PREPARES FOR A MILITARY CELEBRATION
More than 1,000 personnel from the three Spanish armed forces will take part in various exhibitions organised in Malaga from Friday 27th May. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía will be attending the event on Sunday as will the Minister of Defence, Carme Chacón, and other dignitaries. There will be various exhibitions and displays, starting today Friday with an exhibition on the Heredia wharf.
On Saturday morning there is a display by all three armed forces simulating a rescue of kidnapped civilians. This will take place on the Malagueta beach. After the simulation will come an aerobatic display by the Patrulla Águila, and the Navy aircraft carrier, Príncipe de Asturias, will be open to visitors.
The main event is scheduled for Sunday, 29th May at around midday in the Plaza del General Torrijos. King Juan Carlos will be presiding over the ‘Homenaje a la Bandera’ (Homage to the Flag) and the ‘Caídos’ (The Fallen) ceremonies.
After the formalities King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia will be hosting a reception for the dignitaries at the La Concepción Botanical gardens.
Although hotels in the centre of Malaga have reported that more than ninety per cent of their rooms are booked not everyone is as pleased. Around 200 people attended a demonstration in Malaga on Tuesday against the Dia de las Fuerzas Armadas saying that it was an unnecessary expense in a time of economic crisis.
KING IN MALAGA FOR ARMED FORCES DAY
King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia will preside over the Armed Forces Day celebrations, to be held for the first time in Malaga on May 28th and 29th.Activities over the Saturday and Sunday include exhibitions by the army, navy and air force, and ceremonies to honour the national flag and those who have died while serving abroad in Afghanistan and Iraq. The celebration dates back to 1978 and took place in the cities where the Army's general captaincies were based. This changed in 1987, when it was decided to hold the event in different cities throughout Spain to strengthen the relationship between the people and the armed forces. Only the date stays the same – the event is always held on the weekend of the Sunday closest to the Day of St Ferdinand, May 30th – King Ferdinand III during his lifetime.
AZERBAIJAN WINS 2011 EUROVISION SONG CONTEST
After an exciting voting in front of tens of thousands of people in a fully packed Düsseldorf Arena and millions of TV viewers all over Europe, it was finally Ell/Nikki from Azerbaijan who received the highest number of points from televoters and juries from the 43 countries participating in this year's edition of Europe's favourite TV-show! Ell/Nikki managed to gather 221 points altogether - followed by Raphael Gualazzi from Italy with 189 points and Sweden's Eric Saade who collected 185 points.

SEVILLE'S FAIR
For one week life in Seville revolves around this fiesta. The music, food, dancing and general joy create a very special atmosphere.
The fiesta officially begins at midnight on Monday with the “lighting test”, the illumination of the thousands of multi-coloured light bulbs in the fairground and adorning the main gateway, which is almost 50 metres high and has a different motif every year. Once inside the gate you come to the “casetas”, and it is here where you really experience the fair. These tents belong to groups of friends and associates, and are a family space where acquaintances, relations and guests are welcomed in and plied with delicious food and wine; there is singing, good conversation and of course, "sevillanas", the local version of flamenco dancing. The lively and festive atmosphere spills over into the area outside the tents: people usually dance in the street, and the friendly personality of the Sevillian people will entice passers-by into the celebration. You should bear in mind that most of the stalls are privately owned and can be entered only by invitation from the members or their friends. There are however public tents which are open to all. The information office at the entrance to the fair will tell you which they are.Throughout the fair, people wear typical Andalusian dress: the men wear the typical outfit of the farmworker, and the women wear flamenco or gypsy dresses. By day the fair is filled with horsewomen, riders and richly festooned carriages. This is what is known as the horse and carriage parade, in which you can take part by renting a buggy with a driver from the regular service. Next to the fairground is the Calle del Infierno (Hell’s Street), a lively recreational area with a host of attractions for children and adults, and stands selling cold drinks and snacks. Another vital component is the bullfight: every afternoon people crowd into the Plaza de la Maestranza bullring to see the day’s bullfight. And after a week of merrymaking there is a spectacular fireworks display at midnight on Sunday to send off the April Fair for another year.
JOHN PAUL II'S BEATIFICATION
The Vatican has hosted its biggest event in years - the beatification of the late Pope John Paul II.The globe-trotting Pope credited with contributing to the fall of communism in Eastern Europe was blessed in St Peter's Square on Sunday 1 May.
The ceremony attracted more than one million people - the biggest crowd in Rome since John Paul II's death, and the election of Pope Benedict XVI, six years ago. Four million pilgrims came on that occasion.
When Pope John Paul II died in April 2005, there were shouts from the throngs of pilgrims who came to pay him their last respects: "Santo subito!" or "Make him a saint right now!".
Beatification is normally the Catholic Church's official authorisation for the local veneration of a person considered to have led an exemplary holy life. Canonisation means that this person may be venerated anywhere in the world.
