This famous sculpture celebrates 125th anniversary since it was a French gift for Americans in 1886. Besides, to commemorate this event, 125 immigrants from many different countries have become American citizens in honor to the statue's symbol of hope.

Why do we change our clocks?William Willett first proposed the idea of British Summer Time in 1907 in a pamphlet entitled 'The Waste of Daylight'. Willett had noticed that the summer mornings light was wasted while people slept, and that the time would be better utilised in the afternoon by putting the clocks forward. After campaigning for years the British Government finally adopted the system a year after Willett's death.
When do other countries change their clocks?North America and most of Canada on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November.
Egypt, Namibia and Tunisia are the only African countries who observe daylight saving.
New Zealand and parts of Australia are the only countries in Oceania that currently put their clocks forwards and backwards.
LABOR DAY IN USA - 5th SEPTEMBER
Labor Day is annually held on the first Monday of September. It was originally organized to celebrate various labor associations' strengths of and contributions to the United States economy. It is largely a day of rest in modern times. Many people mark Labor Day as the end of the summer season and a last chance to make trips or hold outdoor events.
What do people do?
Labor Day is a day of rest or the last chance for many people to go on trips before the summer ends. For students, it is the last chance to organize parties before school starts again. In some neighborhoods, people organize fireworks displays, barbecues and public arts or sports events. The football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend. Traditionally, people did not wear white clothes, particularly shoes, after Labor day. However, this custom is slowly dying out. More and more people now wear white all year round, rather than just in the summer. Similarly, it is the custom to wear a straw cowboy hat from Memorial Day until Labor Day, then a felt one until Memorial Day comes around again.Public life

Some public celebrations, such as fireworks displays, picnics and barbecues, are organized, but they are usually low key events. For many teams, it is the start of the football season. WAY OF THE CROSS IN WYD 2011
Passion, art, and popular piety have had their place at World Youth Day (WYD).The setting for the act was the 700 meters that lie between Plaza de Cibeles and Plaza de Colón (Madrid), which was lined with 15 sculpture sets from the Spanish Holy Week tradition that made up the “Via Crucis” of WYD. Benedict XVI has presided this ceremony on August 19th.
The 15 Stations of the Cross are from 12 different cities and depict the various points in the Passion and Death of Christ. This event has been a unique example of how the Passion of Christ is lived in the host country. In most Spanish cities, Holy Week is lived in a very special way. Confraternities and religious organizations, with the goal of spreading devotion, have sculptures - the oldest dating back to the sixteenth century – that they carry in procession through the streets as a living reminder of the different moments of the Lord's Passion. Each of these 15 sculpture sets has depicted a Station of the Cross.

MALAGA FAIR 2011
The annual Fair in Malaga (Spain) begins on 12th August and ends on 20th August.
These dates in mid-August which historically refer to the celebration of the capture of Malaga by the Catholic Monarchs on August 18, 1491 belong to one of the most anticipated events of the year where thousands of locals and tourists enjoy a few days of amusement: Dancing, singing, drinking (in moderation!), eating all contribute to making this one of the most popular festivities in all of Andalucía, if not Spain.
The “Feria de Málaga” boasts an average yearly attendance of 3 million people!
The fair officially starts on Friday 12th August at midnight with the “Pregon” (opening speech) which is usually carried out by a famous personality; this year the honour falls on local singing sensation, Pablo Alborán. Following the “Pregon” there will be a firework display and a free concert with Pablo Alborán. All the above takes place on the La Malagueta beach.
“Feria de Dia” (Day Fair)Saturday the 13th August is the first full “feria” day; the fun begins with the “Feria de día” or Day Fair which takes place in the city centre. The Calle Larios and surrounding streets are the place to be from around midday until the early evening (around 7pm). Expect lots of singing and dancing – you’ll probably end up joining in – as well as some great tapas, wines and sherry (referred to as “fino”).
Although you can expect warm temperatures – light clothing is highly recommended – the town hall has installed special canopies over the Calle Larios in order to provide some protection from the scorching August sun!
The Night Fair
After the madness of the day fair, the fun continues at the “Real dela Feria”, the main fairground located on the outskirts of the city, next to the Malaga Exhibition Centre. Here you’ll be able to enjoy the rides at the fun fair – a must-do if you have kids – and the traditional “casetas” where you will experience the best of flamenco singing and dancing. Throughout the whole week, the town hall has also organised over 200 free concerts which encompass a wide selection of musical styles and disciplines.
Not to be missed…
■The “Romería” – The traditional horse parade where hundreds of beautifully dressed fair-goers ride through the Malagueta area of the city on their horses and carriages, each decorated with beautifully coloured flowers and ribbons. This year, it takes place on Saturday the 13th August.
■Bullfighting – The Malaga Fair attracts some of the biggest names in the industry and every day, theLa Malaguetabullring hosts spectacular bull fights that will thrill all who attend. I understand it’s not for everyone but if you haven’t experienced a true bullfight, this might be your chance to see the real thing!
