THE THREE KINGS DAY
The next important day is the 6th January or Three Kings Day (Los Reyes). This is the day that the Three Kings arrived in Bethlehem, it is also the most important day for the children as the Three Kings in effect replace Father Christmas for Spanish children (although Santa is becoming popular). They arrive overnight on the 5th January, riding camels and leave presents for the children. Parents encourage children to write to the Three Kings with their gift requests.
Every town and city in Spain will have a procession on the night of 5th January where tons of sweets will be thrown from the passing floats, much to the joy of the children (and adults).
On the morning of the 6th January you can only imagine the excitement of the children as they rip open their gifts.
The three Kings are:
Gaspar has brown hair and a brown beard and wears a green cloak and a gold crown with green jewels on it. He is the King of Sheba. Gaspar represents the Frankincense brought to Jesus.
Melchior has long white hair and a white beard and wears a gold cloak. He is the King of Arabia. Melchior represents the Gold brought to Jesus.
Balthazar has black skin and and wears a purple cloak. He is the King of Tarse and Egypt. Balthazar represents the gift of Myrrh that was brought to Jesus.
THREE WISE MEN IN SPAIN - 5th JANUARY
On 5 January Spain celebrates the end of Christmas with a great party where everybody gives and receives presents. It is to celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men - Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar - to the city where Jesus was born. In the same way that the Three Wise Men gave gifts to baby Christ, here they share out presents amongst children around Spain - in fact; they are more popular than Santa Claus.
There are lots of processions of the Three Wise Men in each city, the children go along with there parents to see the kings and receive sweets from them.
Before going to sleep, children put some milk and biscuits next to the Christmas tree for the Three Kings and some water for their camels. They also leave out their best pair of shoes to be filled with presents.
On the next day, 6 January children wake up and see how many presents they have received. If they have behaved properly, they will find a lot of good presents but if they have been naughty they will find coal. These days, the coal is actually made of sugar, but some years ago it was real coal.
During this day, all families enjoy a piece of roscon (a sugar-frosted fruit-filled bread) for breakfast tradition says that the person who finds a novelty such as a coin, in his or her portion will have good luck for the next year.
Both young and old enjoy opening their presents on this day, but sadly it also marks the end of Christmas.
TWELFTH NIGHT - DECORATIONS
Twelfth Night is the night before Twelfth Day.
Twelfth Night (5th January) is when all Christmas Decorations should be removed so as not to bring bad luck upon the home. If decorations are not removed on Twelfth Night, they should stay up all year.
Why is it bad luck to leave the decorations up after Twelfth Night?
Long ago it was thought that leaving the decorations up would cause a disaster. People believed that tree-spirits lived in the greenery (holy, ivy etc) they decorated their houses with. The greenery was brought into the house to provide a safe haven for the tree-spirits during the harsh midwinter days. Once this period was over it was necessary to return the greenery back outside to release the tree-spirits into the countryside once again. Failure to do this would mean that vegetation would not be able to start growing again (spring would not return), leading to an agricultural disaster.
It was also thought that, if you left the greenery in the house, the tree-spirits would cause mischief in the house until they were released.
Today people still feel uneasy about leaving the Christmas decorations up after Twelfth Night. Despite decorations now being made of foil or paper, and even though the tree-spirits are long forgotten, the superstition still survives.
RECIPE FOR THE ROSCÓN DE REYES (THREE KINGS)
• 500 gr. wheat flour• 200 ml warm milk
• 100 gr sugar
• 30 gr yeast
• 2 eggs (one for brushing the dough)
• salt
• 100 gr margarine
. dried fruit
First of all mix the yeast with a little of warm milk, sugar, and flour. Wait 15 minutes until it doubles it´s size. Now we must mix the rest of flour, milk, salt, margarine and sugar with a wooden spoon. Keep kneading until getting a soft dough. Now add the yeast mixture and continue kneading and try to get off all the air.
Now try to form a "Roscon" this looks like a doughnut and the decorate it with dried fruits. Rub it with the egg and bake it at a 200 ª C preheated oven for 10 minutes or until golden brown. This recipes makes two medium Roscones or cakes.
Then decorate it with some sugar and if you want put some whipped cream or even vanilla custard, but don´t forget to hide the little present inside!!!

THE FAIR OF MALAGA 15th - 22nd AUGUST
On the Friday of the third half of August, Malaga celebrates a fiesta to commemorate the towns
conquest by the Catholic King and Queen.
The ‘Feria’ (Fair) is a popular celebration lasting 8 days involving the whole town, whatever age: children, young and not so young people participate, and even all the foreigners feel ‘at home’. The showy flamenco suits, the sound of "malagueñas" and "verdiales" (the folclore dances of this province) and Malaga’s cool wine flood the streets with bursting merriment during all these vibrating days of the so-called Fair of Southern Europe.
The Fair of Malaga starts with an impressing light and sound spectacle of 30 minutes’ fireworks that are synchronized with classical music and let the thousands of people who are waiting in the Central Park and the harbour know that the Fair is being inaugurated. The next day (Saturday) and the following nine days, Malaga – downtown is celebrating fiesta with shows on all its squares, fiestas and music in all its streets. You can see hundreds of people in their typically Andalusian outfit, brightening the streets with color and contributing to the spectacular sight to the visitor who will feel like being among friends and invited to actively join the ‘fiesta’.
You can also admire the horse parades where jockeys present spectacular Andalusian horses showing elegant steps. At night, an amply organised bus transport system takes you to the fair in the outskirts, called "El Real de la Feria".
In one of the more tha 200 ‘casetas’– dance halls you can have a glass of Malaga wine while you listen and watch a ‘Malagueña’ or ‘Sevillana’ folclore dance of this region, and if you are up to it join the dance. You can enjoy first class shows for free in the official town hall – ‘caseta oficial’, and later go on one of the numerous roundabouts in the ‘Devil’s Street’ (calle del diablo). During all these days you have two main points of entertainment: in the morning and during the day downtown, and at night on the Fair, both events where all visitors no matter whether from here or not is invited to wine and beautiful dances.

ST. SWITHIN'S DAY - 15th JULY
St. Swithin's Day is 15 July, a day on which people watch the weather for tradition says that whatever the weather is like on St. Swithin's Day, it will continue so for the next forty days.
Who was St. Swithin?
St. Swithin (or more properly, Swithun) was a Saxon Bishop of Winchester. He was born in the kingdom of Wessex and educated in its capital, Winchester. He was famous for charitable gifts and building churches.
Why do people watch the weather on St. Swithin's day?
A legend says that as the Bishop lay on his deathbed, he asked to be buried out of doors, where he would be trodden on and rained on. For nine years, his wishes were followed, but then, the monks of Winchester attempted to remove his remains to a splendid shrine inside the cathedral on 15 July 971. According to legend there was a heavy rain storm either during the ceremony or on its anniversary.
This led to the old wives' tale (folklore) that if it rains on St Swithin's Day (July 15th), it will rain for the next 40 days in succession, and a fine 15th July will be followed by 40 days of fine weather.
However, according to the Met Office, this old wives' tale is nothing other than a myth. It has been put to the test on 55 occasions*, when it has been wet on St Swithin's Day and 40 days of rain did not follow.
What symbols are associated with St. Swithins?
The emblems of St. Swithin refer to the legend of the forty days' rain (raindrops) and the apples from the trees he planted.
ORANGE MEN'S DAY - (Northern Ireland) - 13th JULY
Protestant Irish march with drums and pipes to commemorate the Battle of Boyne, which occurred on Ireland’s east coast in 1690. In Northern Ireland, it is a bank holiday. Schools and many businesses and organizations are closed. Some shops may be closed. Public transport services may run on their regular or special holiday timetables.
In 1690, William III of England defeated the exiled Catholic king James II at the Battle of the Boyne. James, who had been in France, had invaded Ireland with French troops.
Men wear orange sashes and black suits and bowler hats. Orange Day marches also take place in Birmingham and Liverpool, and in some parts of Canada, for example."
This day is known as "Orangemen's Day", "Orange Day", "the Glorious Twelfth" or just "the Twelfth". The day falls on July 12. However, if July 12 is a Saturday or Sunday, the bank holiday falls on Monday, July 13 or 14.
WORLD REFUGEE DAY - 20th JUNE
2014 Theme: "1 family torn apart by war is too many"
The United Nations' (UN) World Refugee Day is observed on June 20 each year. This event honors the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.
People honor the spirit and courage of millions of refugees worldwide on World Refugee Day. It is a day to recognize the contributions of refugees in their communities. Organizations such as Amnesty International and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) often get involved in various activities for the day. They may include:
- Activist protests against using former prisons to detain migrants and asylum seekers.
- Screenings of films about the lives of asylum seekers living in a western country.
- Organization members visiting asylum seekers in detention to offer moral support.
- Letters or petitions to governments on the treatment of asylum seekers in detention.
Some communities dedicate an entire week that includes World Refugee Day to encourage people to think about the lives of refugees and the human right to a secure place to that one can see as “home”.
